Ghostscript can be used as a raster image processor for raster computer printers or as the raster image processor engine behind PostScript and PDF viewers. Its tools can be used to take Postscript output from a program such as a word processor and print it to a wide number of printer devices. Ghostscript can also be used as a file format converter and can convert between formats such as PostScript and PDF.
Ghostscript has been ported to many operating systems, including Unix, Linux, Mac OS, OpenVMS, Microsoft Windows, MS-DOS, FreeDOS, OS/2, Atari TOS and AmigaOS.
